People of PressPage: Sébastien Willems
CEO with a passion to change the world
As co-founder and CEO of PressPage, Sébastien has seen lots of developments within the company and the field of PR over the past ten years. His passion for PressPage and PR is undeniable. But there is more to tell about this cheerful guy, we sat down to get to know him a bit better.
The expertise of Sébastien
From the start, about ten years ago, I have been the General Manager of PressPage. We started out with just three of us, so back in the day we did everything ourselves. My role has changed a lot over the years and is growing into a more specialized one focusing on strategy and vision. It’s my job to figure out how we are going to grow into a company we can be proud of in 2020, and increasingly make a difference in the field of communication and PR.
Within this role I have over a decade of experience as an entrepreneur. I studied Digital Communication in Utrecht, so I have a lot of feeling with our product and the technical side of our business. But right now I’m transforming from a technical founder to a business founder. I have learned a lot from looking at other start-ups. Being in business and seeing how other businesses deal with tough circumstances has been incredibly valuable. Of course I have seen lots of great successes, but the rough moments are the ones I learn the most from. I think communication and people skills are essential in my role. We have so many great people with specialized skills, it is my responsibility to bind these people together to forge great collaborations. If you want to move ahead, you need to focus on vision, mission, identity etc.
Three things you didn’t know about Sébastien
I wholeheartedly believe in cryptocurrencies. I spend a few hours every week gathering information about these currencies and trading them. In 20 years, cryptocurrencies will have grown massively, just like the internet has. The fact that so many geniuses are continuously working on updates is really exciting. Regular (fiat) money is a joke if you see what is happening with cryptocurrencies right now!
I have an incredible fear of hights and depths. Standing on top of something high is hellish for me. But swimming and being able to look deep below me, also scares me. Looking up to something really high, like the Eiffel Tower, creates the same sensation. I do push myself to not give in to this fear. I went into an air balloon and I would like to go skydiving someday, just to push myself to control this fear I have.
Elon Musk is a true hero of mine. What that guy does and how he thinks is so inspiring to me! I recommend everybody reads his biography, it will make you really happy.
The secret dream of Sébastien
Something that I am very passionate about, is setting up a fund for startups using cryptocurrency. I'm currently working on creating a model for this fund. It should be a global non-profit, similar to Wikipedia, and aiming on making a lot more money available to startups and making sure more people can enjoy getting a return on their investments. I think the current system is odd and outdated, it shouldn't matter if you invest $5,- or $5 million. Anyone should be able to get the type of returns venture capital firms get.
